Its called the green house effect because it has the same effect as a green house, when all the pollution builds up in the atmosphere , the heat cant escape so It's trapped in the atmosphere like it would in a greenhouse. When the heat is trapped in the atmosphere this heats up the earth, causing global warming.

Greenhouse Effect is the phenomenon in which the sun's ultraviolet rays are trapped in the earth's atmosphere due to the presence of green house gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, oxides of nitrogen, water vapour, etc.

Green houses are glass structures which are used for growth of plants. The plants are kept inside these houses to grow. The sun's heat rays enter thr structure but cannot escape and thus keeps the environment for the plants warm. Because the same phenomenon occurs with earth's atmosphere trapping the heat, it is called Green house effect.
