Answer:

A new period begins when a new principal energy level begins filling with electrons. Period 1 has only two elements (hydrogen and helium), while periods 2 and 3 have 8 elements. ... A group is a vertical column of the periodic table, based on the organization of the outer shell electrons. There are a total of 18 groups.

Periods are horizontal rows in the periodic table. For each period, all the elements in it have the same number of electron shells.

Groups are the vertical columns in the periodic table. Elements in a group have similar chemical properties as they have the same number of outermost shell electrons. Some groups have names, like group 1 is called alkali metals.

There are 7 periods and 18 groups in the modern periodic table.

1. On moving from left to right in a periodic table, the metallic character of elements decreases.

Metals have a tendency to lose electrons. In a period, atomic size decreases so it becomes difficult to remove the electrons of the outermost shell.

2. On moving from top to bottom in a periodic table, the metallic character of element increases.

As we move down the group, atomic size increases so the electron of the outermost shell is easy to remove and hence metallic character of the element increases.
