Growth may be defined as a permanent irreversible increase in size or volume or mass accompanied by an increase in the dry weight of a living organism. When anabolism exceeds catabolism, growth takes place.

  • In vascular plants, growth takes place in the meristematic region only.
  • The meristems are situated at the apices of the roots and shoot, in the cambia of dicots and gymnosperms, and at the leaf bases as well as at the bases of internodes in monocotyledonous plants.
  • In plants, growth other than growth in reproductive structures, is called vegetative or somatic growth.
  • In mature plants, the formation of reproductive organs like floral bud, flower and fruit, is called reproductive growth.
  • Growth has three phases -

         (i) The Phase of cell division

(ii) The phase of cell elongation

         (iii) The phase of maturation.
