The sub-kingdom phanerogamae of kingdom plantae is further classified into Gymnosperme and Angiospermae.  Gymnosperms were the first plants to have a seed habit. These are the plants which possess naked seeds. e.g.Pinus, cycas and other coniferous trees are gymnosperms.

*Gymnosperms are seed producing, non-flowering plants whose seeds are naked.

*Gymnosperms are evergreen.

*Gymnosperms have their reproductive structures in the form of cones.

*Gymnospermic cones are unisexual.

*Gymnosperms do not have cotyledons.

*Some gymnosperms like ginkgoes bear fruit like structures .

*Gymnosperms have bare seeds found on cones.

*Wood is soft in gymnosperms.

*Gymnosperms are perennial.
