The first pair of numbers is the old hardiness zone . This plant will survive winter temperatures in zones 5 to 10 .The second pair of numbers is the heat zone . 11-1 indicates that the plant is heat tolerant in zones 11 through 1 .

The earth is divided into 3heat zones..
1. Torrid zone (the region between the tropic and f cancer and Tropic of Capricorn)
2. Temperate zone (the region between Tropic of Cancer and arctic circle /the region between Tropic of Capricorn and Antarctic circle)
3. Frigid zone(the region above arctic circle and the region below Antarctic circle)

The torrid zone is the hottest zone with the highest temperatures..
The temperate zone is the moderate zone with moderate temperatures I.e neither tomorrow hot nor too cold..
The frigid zone is the coldest one with the lowest temperatures..

Hope this helps..
