Function. The portal venous system is responsible for directing blood from parts of the gastrointestinal tract to the liver. Substances absorbed in the small intestine travel first to the liver for processing before continuing to the heart. Not all of the gastrointestinal tract is part of this system.

Portal vein brings blood that is rich with nutrients to liver for storage and metabolism. Liver is the storehouse of our body . It plays very important role in blood glucose level homeostasis. Many important metabolic reactions regarding CHO, fat , protein, nucleotide metabolisms are related with the functions of liver. To accomplish that blood has to pass through liver. Also kufer cells in hepatocytes surrounding sinusoids will phagocyte any foreign organ that entered blood through GIT before entering into the general circulation. Also liver has the ability to detoxify and toxic substance before entering the general circulation or detoxify drugs ingested.
