Answer---- The vein which start with capillaries and ends at capillaries in some other body part is called portal vein.
In other words the vein that carry blood from vein capillary network to another capillary network is called hepatic portal system.
1. It is responsible for directing blood from intestinal canal or from alimentary Canal through hepatic portal vein to liver before transported to heart.
2. The digested food collected by blood from intestine is stored in the liver.
3. From the liver the capillaries rejoin to form hepatic vein which open into inferior Vena cava which finally goes to the heart.

Hepatic Portal Circulation:
Hepatic (hepato = liver) portal circulation detours venous blood from gastrointestinal organs (stomach and small intestine) through the liver before it returns to heart.
After a meal, hepatic portal blood is rich in absorbed substances.
Liver stores some and modifies others before they pass into the general circulation.
For example, liver converts glucose into glycogen for storage hence maintains blood sugar homeostasis.
It detoxifies harmful substances and destroys bacteria by phagocytosis.
