heterospory is the production of spores of two different sizes and sexes by the saprophytes of land plants.
it's significance :       
increased survival rates of gametophyte as it is enclosed within a sterile jacket of cells ... also, this advancement set the stage for evolution of seeds and pollen

the phenomena of having two types  of spore by the same plant is called as heterospory . it is found in pteridophytes like selaginella , salvinia , marsilea , all gymnosperms and angiosperms.. :)
