Sen77: A homologous series is a group of organic compounds having similar chemical properties and similar structure in which the successive compounds differ by a CH2 group. --simple : )

the compounds who generally belong to the same family.i.e,they posses similar functions ,have similar functional groups and they usually differ by a CH2 unit .
for example,
propane and butane.
propane has 4 carbons in a single bond.has the molecular formula C3H8
butane has 4 carbon atoms in single bond has molecular formula C4H10.
these two compounds differ by a CH2 unit.thus are homologous series !

hope it helps!!!!

homologous series is the  successive series of carbon compounds which differ from the CH2 group having the same chemical properties and same functional group and which belongs to the same family
----------------------------------
example
----------------------------
butane ------ C4H10
pentane ----- C5H12

these two will differ from CH2  group and they belong to alkane family and are successive carbon compounds

there homologous series of carbon compounds will differ from 14 amu because molar mass of CH2 is 14
