What is homologous series?
Answers
Homologous series
In organic chemistry, a homologous series is a sequence of compounds with the same functional group and similar chemical properties in which the members of the series can be branched or unbranched, or differ by -CH2.
Answer:
Homologous Series
A series of carbon compounds in which same functional group substitutes the hydrogen atom is called a homologous series.
These compounds have similar chemical properties due to the addition of same kind of functional group throughout the chain.
Homologous series is a series of compounds with similar chemical properties and some functional group differing from the successive member by CH2.
For example,
1.) The series of alkanes i.e. Methane, ethane, propane, butane and so on is a homologous series.
2.) With the increase in molecular mass in a homologous series the physical properties like melting points, boiling points and solubility in a particular solvent increases.
3.)But the chemical properties of a homologous series determined by the functional group remain same.
