♧ A homologous series is a group of organic compounds having similar chemical properties.
In homologous series successive compounds are differ by CH2 group.
Characteristics of Homologous series :-
1) = The compounds of a homologous series shows similar chemical properties.
2) = The different in the molecular mass of any two homologous is 14u.
3) = We can represent all the members of a homologous series by the same general formula.
Examples of Homologous series :-
Methane = CH4
Ethane = C2H4
Propane = C3H6
Butane = C4H8
Pentane = C5H10
Hexane = C6H12
And so on...
□ The general formula of Homologous series of alkane = CnH2n+2
