The organic reaction in which a nitrite reacts with an arene compound to create an aryl ketone is termed as Hoesch reaction or Houben Hoesch reaction. This reaction is a form of Friedel - Crafts acylation with hydrogen chloride and a Lewis acid catalyst. Kurt Hoesch and Josef Houben talked about this reaction in 1915 and 1926 respectively. Hence this reaction is named after them.
