It is generally known as serum trypsin inhibitor. Alpha 1-antitrypsin is also referred to as alpha-1proteinase inhibitor (A1PI) because it inhibits a wide variety of proteases.

The Human Alpha-1-Antitrypsin is a protein. It is produced by the SERPINA1 gene. It is an enzyme inhibitor that is known to protect tissue from enzymes of inflammatory cells. It mainly inhibits neutrophil elastase.

If the concentration of Human Alpha-1-Antitrypsin falls below its normal range of 0.9-2.3 g/L then the neutrophil elastase start the breakdown of elastin, that is known to degrade the elasticity of lung and result in the disease of respiration such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
