We have to find out hybridisation of central atom in the following..

NO₃¯ , BF₄¯ , PF₅ , IF₃ and CO₂

solution : using VSEPR (valence shell elecron pairs repulsion) theory,

for NO₃¯,

no of bond pairs = 3

no of lone pairs = (3 × 6 + 5 + 1 - 3 × 8)/2

= (18 + 6 - 24)/2 = 0

so hybridisation must be sp²

for BF₄¯

no of bond pairs = 4

no of lone pairs = (4 × 7 + 3 + 1 - 4 × 8)/2 = 0

so hybridisation is sp³

for PF₅

no of bond pairs = 5

no of lone pairs = (5 × 7 + 5 - 5 × 8)/2 = 0

so hybridisation is sp³d

for IF₃

no of bond pairs = 3

no of lone pairs = (7 + 3 × 7 - 3 × 8)/2 = 2

so hybridisation is sp³d

for CO₂

no of bond pairs = 2

no of lone pairs = (6 × 2 + 4 - 2 × 8)/2 = 0

so hybridisation is sp
