Hybrid vigour or Heterosis is the increase in such characteristics as size, growth rate, fertility, and yield of a hybrid organism (an organism produced by cross breeding) over those of its parents.. The first-generation(F1) offspring generally show, in greater measure, the desired characteristics of both parents.
For example, when a male lion mates with a female tigress, the resulting offspring is a hybrid known as a 'liger'.
