Dissimilar orbitals like s,p,d,f with one or more number,with nearly the same energy on the same atom may combine or mix completely to form an equal number of equivalent energy new orbitals with properties of their own.
This is called hybridization of orbitals.

when bonds are formed between atoms in the formation of molecules there is a change in the nature of the atomic orbitals n each atom. effectively new molecular orbitals are formed and the electrons in these orbitals are those of the molecules as a whole. the alteration of the structure of the atomic orbitals is called hybridization
