Hybridisation is a phenomenon in the chemical binding where the different shells or sub-shells of an atom getting hybridized comes to a common energy level, which is lower than all the participating shells, and the compound.

Methane is a compound of Carbon and Hydrogen. Here, Carbon shows a valency of 4. All four bonds of carbon have s p^{3}sp3  hybridisation. This means carbon bonding have participation from 1 S shell and 3 P shell, which combine to give 4 s p^{3}sp3 hybrids. This s p^{3}sp3 hybridisation is so stable, that methane is formed
