what is hydride gap? why is heavy water used in nuclear reactor

Hydride gap - The metals of 7th, 8th and 9th group do not form hydrides of periodic table and this is called as the hydride gap.

Heavy water is used in nuclear reactor as a neutron moderator to slow down the speed of neutron. So that they can react with uranium atoms.
