The term HYDROCARBONS means organic compounds which contain only carbon and hydrogen. By using this definition, four classes of hydrocarbons are included: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and aromatic. The simplest compounds containing 2 carbons shown on the LEFT are as follows: Alkanes.

hydrocarbons are divided into two, one is open chains and one is closed chains. open chains are divided into two, saturated hydrocarbons and unsaturated hydrocarbons. saturated hydrocarbons - Alkanes eg  methane and ethane. unsaturated hydrocarbons are divided into two Alkanes and Alkynes eg  ethane and propane
