HYDROGENATION: The process in which unsaturated compounds reacts with hydrogen in the presence of catalyst to form saturated compounds are called hydrogenation. Industrial Application: This reaction is commonly used in the hydrogenation of vegetable oils.

What is hydrogenation? What is its industrial application?


Hydrogenation is nothing but an addition of hydrogen to an unsaturated hydrocarbon to make it a saturated hydrocarbon on the presence of a catalyst .


The applications of hydrogenation are as follows :-


(i) To convert alkenes to alkanes .


(ii) To convert alkenes to alkanes .


(iii) To convert vegetable oils to ghee.


(iv) Other economical reactions.
