Hydrosphere

The Earth is a unique planet in the solar system. It is the only known planet where water, so vital for suspension of life, is found in plenty. About 71% of Earth's surface is covered with water and 29% is with land. When astronauts first saw the Earth from space It looked blue due to the presence of water. So the earth is also called the water planet or the blue planet. Hydrosphere consists of water in all its forms. It is found as running water in ocean and rivers as still water inlet and pond and as ice in glaciers. Water is also present underground and in the form of water vapour in atmosphere. All this water together form the Hydrosphere.

More the 97 percentage of the earth's water is found in the ocean. The water in the ocean and sea is to study for human consumption. A large proportion of the rest of the water is in the form of ice sheets and glaciers under the ground and a very small percentage is available as fresh water for human consumption. Therefore, despite being a blue planet we face shortage of water.
