HYPERCONJUGATION:

Explanation: When an alkyl group is attached to an unsaturated system such as double bond or a benzene ring.the order of inductive effect is actually reversed.This is effect is called hyperconjugation effect or Baker-Nathan effect.

RELATIVE STABILITY OF FREE RADICAL:

The order of stability of free radicals is the same as that of carbocations i.e., tertiary >secondary>primary.This order of stability can be easily explained on the basis of hyperconjugation.Greater the number of alkyl groups attached to the carbon atlom carrying the odd electron, greater is the delocalisation of the odd electron and hence more stable is the alkyl free radical.Thus,

tertiary >secondary>primary
