Hypertension refers to increased pressure levels in the arterial blood. Normal ranges in adults are systolic pressure of 100-140  and a diastolic pressure of 60-90. The values vary widely in children.
Causes; divided into primary and secondary
primary causes include; aging, genetic factors, stress, obesity and  high salt intake. Prenatal and post natal factors such as maternal smoking, lack of breastfeeding and low birth weight can also predispose an individual to the condition .
secondary causes; are due to other disease conditions in the body such as kidney failure and hyperthyroidism among others.
Preventative  measures: living a healthier lifestyle like reducing salt intake, avoid smoking during pregnancy, keep fit, avoid alcohol intake, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Hypertension is measured using a sphygomanomter.
