Hypotonic solution:-

  1. If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, if the solution is very dilute solution, then the cell will gain water by osmosis.
  2. Osmotic forces then cause water from a solution to enter the cells.
  3. If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, if the solution is very dilute solution, then the cell will gain water by osmosis.
  4. Such dilute solution is called Hypotonic solution.
  5. The cell will therefore swell up and increase in volume.

Answer:

Tonicity is a measure of the effective osmotic pressure gradient; the water potential of two solutions separated by a semipermeable cell membrane. In other words, tonicity is the relative concentration of solutes dissolved in solution which determine the direction and extent of diffusion.
