Inelastic collision:
The collision in which there is some loss of kinetic energy is known as inelastic collision.
Example:
- collision between two vehicles is inelastic in nature
- when we drop a ball on the ground it does not rebound to its original height so thereby showing some loss in kinetic energy during the collision. Thus, this type of collision is inelastic in nature.
Characteristics:
- The linear momentum is always conserved.
- Kinetic energy is not always conserved.
- Total energy remains conserved.
- The forces involved in the process are generally non conservative in nature.
