The word "curve" is a general term referring to any interpolation of points on a graph. Before the computer enabled advance non-linear fitting, linear algebra was the state-of-art for curve fitting. Therefore the axis were always set (for instance, calculating the log of the values etc.) in order to receive a linear calibration curve and thereafter fit the straight line equation.
