Here is your answer :

Full form of IIT is Indian Institutes of Technology. There are 23 colleges of IIT in India. They are autonomous public Institutes of higher education. They governed by the IIT act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down there powers, duties, and frameworks for governance etc.

It is not easy to admission at IIT, and every year only 2 percent of applicants who attempt to crack the entrance manage to secure a seat in them. IIT Kharagpur was the first acknowledged in IIT in 1956 .Since then 16 such Institutes have been established and 7 moreare newly approved.
