\huge\textsf{Imbibition}

\huge{→} Adsorption of liquid by any solid material is called Imbibition or adsorption of water by hydrophilic colloid is known as imbibition.

\huge{→}This is a physical process by which dry solid colloid material swells up by adsorption of water.

\huge{→}The cell wall is made up of colloidal substance as cellulose , pectin , hemicellulose etc. and they imbibe water.

\huge{→}Protein , Agar-Agar , starch etc these are all imbibant material.

\huge{→} Imbibition is also a type of diffusion since water movement is along a concentration gradient , the seeds and other such materials have almost no water hence they adsorb water easily.

\huge{→}The heat released during the imbibition is called heat of wetting.

\huge{→} Imbibition is less in compact arranged material like wood , and more in lighter or soft material like gelatin.

#Define:

=>Imbibition  is a special type of diffusion when water is absorbed by solids-colloids causing an enormous increase in volume.

=>Imbibition means the absorption of water by the solid particles of an adsorbent without forming a solution.

#Example:

=> The absorption of water by seeds and dry wood.
