Imbibition is a seed's or a plant's absorption of water, a process that causes swelling in some plant cells and organs. Seeds undergo imbibition swelling when exposed to water. The process of imbibition is important to the plant since it encourages seedlings to emerge out of the soil and establish themselves.

It is adsorption of water molecules on the surface of living or dead cell of cellulose, starch and protein.Adsorption of water molecules and then it swells up. Wooden doors or Windows have lignified dead cells so in rainy season they adsorb moisture and swells up.

There are many benefits of this process some of them are -
