Adsorption of water by hydrophilic colloids is known as imbition. In this process water is absorbed by solid particles present in an adsorbent and so solution is formed.
During germination by imbition, water penetrates the hard seed coat. This will start to soften the hard tissues inside. The volume increases and the grain starts swelling up. Finally the seed coat ruptures and the water activates the dormant embryo.
