What is Bayer's test? What is its mechanism?

Bayer’s test is a laboratory test to identify the presence of double bond in the given unsaturated compound.

In this reaction unsaturated compound ,having double bonds is reacted with cold and dilute alkaline potassium permanganate to form vicinal glycols i.e. 1,2-diols.

In this reaction KMnO₄ is consumed ,hence purple colour of potassium permanganate disappears.

Mechanism:—

MnO₄- attacks on double bond to form complex which on hydrolysis give vicinal diols.
