In 1963, Nagaland was made the 16th State of the Indian Union. Later, N.E.FA. was made a part of the Assam In 1966, the hilly areas of Punjab were merged with Himachal Pradesh and the remaining area, on the basis of language, was divided into two full-fledged States of Haryana and Punjab and the capital of these States-Chandigarh- was made a Union Territory. In 1970, two hilly districts of Assam weremade a sub-state by name, Meghalaya

In January 1971 Himachal Pradesh and in January,1972 Meghalaya ,tripura, Manipur became full fledged states and Arunachal Pradesh and mizoram as Union territories. In 1973 Mysore was re named as Karnataka and the Laccadives , municoy and Aminidivi group of island were renamed as lakshadweep . In 1975, Sikkim became an integral part of Indian Union as its 22nd state.
