Indicator is a substance by which we can detect the acidic or basic nature of a solution.

Explanation:

1. Indicator is that chemical compound or that substance which has the ability to change colour in acid or base and this property can be used to detect whether the solution is acidic or basic.

2. These compounds are generally derived form the pigments of plants or may be derived artificially.

3. Two examples of indicators includes litmus paper and phenolphthalein.

• When litmus paper is dipped in solution which is acidic, it turns into red color.

• Similarly, litmus paper changes its color into blue when dipped in solution which is basic.

• Phenolphthalein when added in solution which is acidic, the solution becomes colourless.

• And when after adding phenolphthalein the solution turns into pink, then it is confirmed that the solution is basic.

4. This way we can use indicators to detect basic and acidic solution.
