Indicators are the substances that mark the completion of reaction or change of state or medium.

For e.g. in the reaction between sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide, phenolphthalein is used as an indicator. Some drops of this indicator is added to acid. At this time indicator and acid do not change colour because this indicator remains colorless in acid but as soon as we start adding base to it, acid will start neutralizing. A stage will come when all the acid in the flask is neutralized and no acid will be left and base added will be excess. At that point of tIme, the color of the solution will become pink. Thus the indicator has helped us in detecting the point when the acid has been completely neutralized and at what time we should stop adding more base to it
