What is indicator? where is litmus extracted from? name two synthetic indicators?

A indicator is used to know the nature of compounds that is which is acid ,base or salt. Ex - Litmus paper , Methyl Orange etc
Litmus is a water-soluble mixture of different dyes extracted from lichens.
Phenolphthalein and Methyl Orange are examples of synthetic indicators.

indicator is a substance which changes its colour in presence of acid or base and indicates its nature Eg red cabbage and turmeric
