When an electrical conductor opposes a change in the current flowing through it, that tendency of such a conductor is known as Inductance.

Explanation:

Electric current flowing through a conductor creates a magnetic field around the material, the strength of which depends on the current’s magnitude. A change in this current brings about a change in the magnetic field surrounding the material.

Properties of inductor:

I. Inductor consumes reactive power.

II. Inductor oppose current change in circuit for AC only. For DC it acts as simple wire.

III. Inductors are used for blocking the AC while passing the DC. They are known as chokes.

IV. Inductors are used to create magnetic fields in electrical machines for the purpose of energy conversion.
