The tendency of ns² electron pairs to participate in bond formation decreases with the increase in atomic size. This trend is called Inert Pair Effect.
It mainly occurs in p-block elements.

Hey!!

The reluctance of the valence s-electrons to be available for bonding as compared to the valence p-electrons due to their greater penetration in the nucleus.
