The property of matter by which it retains its state of rest or its velocity along a straight line so long as it is not acted upon by an external force. an analogous property of a force: electric inertia.
When a carpet is beaten by stick the carpet is set into motion. But due to inertia, the dust particles remain at rest. When branches are shaken in one direction, the fruits and leaves due to inertia remain at the original position due to inertia of rest.
