The Infant Mortality Rate is the measure of no. of deaths of children below 1 year of age per 1000 live births. This IMR is used as a measure by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a measure to identify developed countries and others that are not developed.

The reasons for low IMR are:-

  1. War- Due to war many children were killed or died due to acute food shortages.
  2. Gender favoritism- In India, people think that having a girl child is a burden,so if a girl child is born she killed.
  3. Medical treatment- In earlier days, due to poor medical support many children died before completing one year of age.
  4. Environmental- In the world, due to increasing level of pollution, babies died due to various pollutants and diseases.
