Inflammation is a process by which the body's white blood cells and substances they produce protect us from infection with foreign organisms, such as bacteria and viruses. ... In these diseases, called autoimmune diseases, the body's normally protective immune system causes damage to its own tissues.

Inflammation :- In simple words it is local response of living mammalian tissue to injury due to any type of agent. It is the body defence reaction in order to remove or limit the spread of infectious agent.

Inflammation can be characterised by the following:-

(i) Redness (Rubor/Erythema):- due to vasodilation.

(ii) Heat (Calor):- metabolic reactions proceed more rapidly.

(iii) Swelling (Tumor):- due to increased permeability of blood vessels.

(iv) Pain (Dolor):- results from injury to neurons and chemicals released by damaged cells like prostaglandins.
