An information system (IS) is an organized system for the collection, organization, storage and communication of information. More specifically, it is the study of complementary networks that people and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create and distribute data. Further, an information system (IS) is a group of components that interact to produce information. It focuses on the internal rather than the external." Information system can also be described as a combination of hardware, software, data, business process and functions which can be used to increase efficiency and management of an organization. Information Systems is the expression used to describe an Automated System (which may be referred to as a Computerized Information System), be it manual, which covers people, machines or organized methods to collect, process, transmit and disseminate data representing information for the user or client.

Though organizational growth is optimal for both small companies as well as large companies, but still there are with many different challenges. With expansion comes more strategic planning, responsibilities. So, the need for better communication.

An information system is the collection of interrelated components that works together to process, store, collect and breakdown the information for decision making.

(1). Transaction Processing System (TPS):

  • Transaction Processing System (TPS) is a information system which processes the data resulting from the of business transactions.
  • Their aim is that, it can provide transaction in order to generate reports and update records to perform store keeping function.
  • The transaction can be performed in two ways:  Online transaction processing and Batching processing .
  • For example: Stock control system, Bill system, payroll system.

(2). Management Information System (MIS):

  • Management Information System (MIS) is designed  in a report format to take relatively raw data available through a TPS and convert them into a summarized and aggregated.
  • There are several types of report are produced in MIS. Some of the reports are on-demand report, summary report,  ad-hoc reports and an exception report.
  • For example: Human resource management, Sales management systems.

(3). Decision Support System (DSS):

  • Decision Support System is a kind of interactive information system that provides information, data manipulation tools and models  to help to make decision in a unstructured and semi-structured situation.
  • DSS deals with making the tools and techniques to help in gathering relevant information and analyze ideas, the end user is more contributing in generating DSS than an MIS.
  • For example: Bank loan management systems and Financial planning systems,.

(4). Experts System:

  • Experts systems based on the principles of artificial intelligence research. These systems include expertise in order to help the managers in diagnosing problems or in problem-solving.
  • It is a knowledge-based information system. It uses its knowledge  to behave as an expert consultant to users.
  • Expert system has knowledge base and software modules  components. These modules perform interpretation on the knowledge and provide answers to a user’s question.
