Ingestion is the process by which an organism takes in the food obtained from it's nature or surroundings. For unicellular organisms like Amoeba, food can be ingested through external cytoplasmic projections called Pseudopodia. But for well developed organisms like human, the mouth can act as the organ used for ingestion.

Digestion is the process by which the food is broken down and different enzymes are released which act on different nutrients and synthesize the food. The obtained nutrients are sent to all the cells and organs for their energy requirements through the blood. The remaining residue present after enzymes have finished acting are known as waste and are expelled out by the anus in humans and contractile vacuole in unicellular organisms like Amoeba.
