Inland water transport is a viable alternative or addition to road and rail transport on European corridors. Though environmentally-friendly and, frequently, the most economical mode of inland transport, it remains largely under-exploited in Europe.

basically ., the term itself defines it's meaning 
INLAND = within the land (state or area)
WATER TRANSPORT= transportation through water bodies.
 together it means the transportation of goods   within the country or a state with the help of water bodies (rivers. large lakes etc.) which inter connected with the states . or different areas .
