“Seed Leaves” These are the first little leaves that you see when the plant sprouts. They are fully formed, inside the seed.

A seed usually contains an embryo and one or two cotyledons.
- In a monocot seed such as maize, there is only one cotyledon or seed leaf. This provides nutrition to the embryo in the seed. The embryo results from the fusion of a male gamete from pollen with an ova of a female plant.
- In a dicot seed, for example, mango, two cotyledons shield the embryo. They also serve the function of providing it nutrition until germination.
- In both monocot and dicot seeds the embryo is divided into two parts- the upper plumule that grows into the shoot and the lower radical that grows into the root.
