The wires, stem and the filament are inside a glass bulb, which is filled with inert gas, such as argon.

  • A tungsten wire filament transmits electricity and is enclosed in an airtight glass case (the envelope, or bulb).
  • Contact wires and a base with two (or more) conductors link the filament to the electrical system.
  • A stem or glass mount is typically attached to the base of incandescent light bulbs, allowing the electrical connections to flow through the envelope without losing air or gas.
  • Little wires embedded in the stem keep the filament and lead wires in place.
