Interatomic forces exists between atoms of a molecule.

What is interatomic force?

  • Interatomic forces have electrical origin in nature.
  • Interatomic forces arise when two atoms are brought closer to each other i.e. at a distance of around 10^{-10} metre.
  • This force continuously increase with decrement in distance between them.
  • As the separation of atoms increase, the interatomic force reduces.
  • Separation of atoms is maximum in gas state and so the interatomic force is minimum in gases.
  • Separation of atoms is minimum in solid state and so the interatomic force is maximum in solids.
