The intermediate or adherens junction (see Cell Junctions) is a cell-cell adhesive that occurs in a number of different forms. The category includes the zonula adherens of simple epithelial cells (1), forming a subapical ring beneath the tight junctions, spot-like punctae adherentes (2) of small intestinal mucosa, and the ribbon-like fasciae adherentes of the intercalated discs of cardiac muscle (3). Ultrastructurally, these junctions are characterized by membrane separation of 20 nm and a cytoplasmic plaque or membrane undercoat that is associated with the actin or microfilament cytoskeleton. The principal functions of adherens junctions are (i) cell adhesion, (ii) organization of the basolateral domain/terminal web of epithelia, (iii) signal transduction, and (iv) contractility.

hope it helpz..
