Despite being the part of Internet, organisations need to have a part of their network which runs on Internet technologies but restricted to the use of internal members only like employees and authenticated clients, vendors and customers. Such a closed network that runs on Internet technologies like email, TCP/IP etc. is called intranet.

It is like a virtual office online which is accessible only to the people who are supposed to access it and that is made possible by giving authorized access to these people through password and encryption protected validation accounts and a well- defined set of roles and permissions for the users of intranet. For instance, a network administrator can access entire intranet and resources on it while an employee in accounts department can access only the data files allocated to him.

Thus, a detailed security policy and its religious implementation is imperative in an intranet to ensure right authenticated access to various resources.
