There are two basic types. Intrusive igneous rocks crystallize below Earth's surface, and the slow cooling that occurs there allows large crystals to form. Examples of intrusive igneous rocks are diabase, diorite, gabbro, granite, pegmatite, and peridotite.

Batholiths are Plutons that have been exposed on the surface through uplift and erosion. Sills and Dikes are tabular bodies of magma that intrude into a fracture. Sills follow bedding planes, whereas dikes cross-cut beds.
