an ion is a charged species . Ions are formed by the loss or gain of electrons. If an ayom suppose chlorine (cl) gains an electron you get cl-which is chlorine anion and in the same way if it looses an electron them it becomes positively charged which is called chlorine cation . The loss and gain of electrons generally occur during oxidation and reduction reactions

OR

When some atoms gain some election or it loses an electron then it gets a certain charge. That state of atom where their is some net charge on atom is called ion.

They are of two types:

Anion & Cation

Anion:- They are negatively charged ions.

Cation:- They are positivily charged ions.

Take eg of ( NACl). Its constituent particles are positively charged sodium ions (Na+) and negatively charged chloride ions (Cl-).
